DHONI BECOMES SUCCESSFUL CAPTAIN

As India won by an innings and 135 runs against Australia today, MS Dhoni became the most successful Test captain in Indian cricket history.
The 31-year-old now has 22 Test wins, one more than Sourav Ganguly.
Here are the top five Indian Test skippers.
MS Dhoni: In the 45 matches he has captained, Dhoni has won 22, lost 12 and drawn 11. He has a win percentage of 48.88. But by the end of the current series against Australia, his winnings percentage could be even higher.

Dhoni took over as captain in 2008 and in terms of consistency, has been one of the longest serving players for India. His win record particularly stands out because he achieved more wins in fewer games than Ganguly. Our of his 22 wins, only three (one each in NZ, SA and WI) have come outside the subcontinent.

His first Test as captain was against South Africa in April 2008, which India won by eight wickets.
Sourav Ganguly: Ganguly’s record of 21 wins as skipper stood for eight years. In his 49 matches, he drew 15 and had a win record of 42.85. In his first match as captain, India took on Bangladesh at Dhaka and won by nine wickets. Ganguly scored a patient 84 runs in the match.
His last match as skipper was against Zimbabwe in Harare in 2005, which India won by 10 wickets.
Mohammad Azharuddin: Azhar won and lost an equal number of games during his captaincy. He won 14, lost 14 and drew 19 games of the 47 he played.
He led India to a tour of New Zealand in his first match as captain in 1990, losing to the hosts by 10 wickets. His last match was also away from home — a draw against Sri Lanka in Colombo.
MAK Pataudi: Pataudi and Sunil Gavaskar have nine wins each, but the former did it in fewer games, so he’s higher up the list. Pataudi played 40 Tests as skipper and won nine of those matches, drawing 12 and losing 19.
His first match was in Bridgetown against West Indies in the 1962 tour which India lost by an innings and 30 runs.
Sunil Gavaskar: Gavaskar may have won just nine matches of his 47 matches as skipper, but he holds the record for scoring the most runs (3449) while leading the team. Under him, India lost eight and drew 30 — a record number of draws.
Even Gavaskar’s first match as captain was against the Kiwis in New Zealand and India won that game by eight wickets, with Gavaskar scoring a century in the first innings.
